Retirement Plan Administration

Independent, non-producing third party administration with open architecture, full fee transparency, and a white-glove service model supported by modern technology.

Excelling in retirement plan design, administration and customer service

Retirement Plan Administrators, Inc. (RPA) is an independent third party retirement plan administration company based in Atlanta, Georgia. RPA has been administering retirement plans since 1985 across multiple states. We have no affiliations with other companies, do not sell or promote a specific product, nor manage money.

  • "True" open investment architecture (no proprietary fund requirements).
  • Full fee transparency -- revenue sharing is disclosed and available to be recaptured into an ERISA budget account, at the plan sponsor's discretion.
  • White-glove service model combining experienced professionals with leading-edge technology.

Plan documents + administrative package

RPA can provide pre-approved Prototype or Volume Submitter plan documents, prepare the Summary Plan Description (SPD), and provide necessary administrative forms. Most qualified plans can rely on our IRS Approval Letter, and when needed we can assist with a separate IRS Determination Letter submission. Our job is to help ensure ongoing compliance with DOL and IRS requirements.

TPA Services

Services can be tailored to your goals -- from full administration to one-time consulting projects. Whether it's streamlined payroll data entry or a more complex IRS Voluntary Correction Program (VCP) submission, RPA is here to ease the administrative burden of your plan.

Plan Administration
Ongoing administration support designed to keep plan operations smooth, accurate, and responsive.
Record Keeping
As an independent company, we work with many platform providers (including American Funds, Ameritas, John Hancock, One America, CUNA, Voya, Nationwide, Empower, Transamerica, and others). We can also record-keep outside assets and support self-directed brokerage solutions, producing combined participant statements when needed.
Compliance Testing
We perform required compliance tests annually -- and more frequently when needed.
Government Filings
We prepare Form 5500 and applicable schedules, including electronic authorization each year, and assist with 1099-R/1096 preparation when an investment provider does not offer that service.
Consulting
Plans can be complicated. RPA helps interpret plan document language, review plan operations, and resolve plan issues. Consulting can be one-time or ongoing for specific compliance testing, operational reviews, or problem resolution.
Form 5500 Issues
Late filings can trigger significant penalties. If prior-year filings are late or missing, we can assist using the DOL's DFVCP program to prepare missing returns and submissions to help reduce exposure.
IRS & DOL Compliance
Plans must follow their documents and be updated periodically. For late amenders and operational errors, we guide you through the IRS correction process -- including self-correction where available, VCP submissions, and support during CAP when necessary.
IRS Audit Support
Audits can be random or data-driven (including Form 5500). RPA can help you prepare, perform a plan review prior to audit selection, and -- with your permission -- communicate directly with the IRS.
Tip: Your investment provider choice may affect net administration costs. We'll help you understand tradeoffs across platforms and account structures.

A Safe Harbor 401(k) plan provides a way for employers to automatically satisfy certain IRS nondiscrimination tests. This allows highly compensated employees (HCEs) to maximize their contributions without restriction.

"
Max Contributions
HCEs can contribute the full $23,000 (or $30,500 if 50+) without restriction.
"
Immediate Vesting
Safe Harbor contributions are always 100% vested immediately.
"
Employee Retention
Guaranteed employer contribution helps attract and retain quality employees.
✓ Annual Notice Required
